Broad Universe News
Hey... Have You Heard... Those Broads are still at it...making waves...making mischief...making moves in the genre...and bringing home the Bling! Go Norwes Young Broad (thanks Amy Hanson and Nancy Jane Moore) According to Amy, "We had a great time at the BU reading at Norwescon! There was lots of solid fiction from amazing writers (what, me biased?)" Nancy Jane agreed, "Indeed, the Norwescon reading was great and pretty well attended, especially considering that it was held at the high party hour--10 PM on Friday night!" The successful Reading also inspired an epiphany for Amy, who noticed that all the people in the audience were friends of someone who was reading. She thought it had a family feel compared to the typical "author reading." Like any good genre writer, she came up with a speculative fiction-sounding phrase to describe the phenomenon. "What we're really doing is colonizing each other's friends!" Thankfully she wasn't talking about alien colonization... or, at least I don't think she was. She promises to do a better job of providing her own potential colonies for future readings. Personal Buzz (thanks to the individuals who sent material) Martha Wells has gone global with not one, but two foreign sales in the past couple of months. The Wizard Hunters (which came out in hardcover from HarperCollins Eos in 2003 and is now out in paperback) was sold to the French publisher L'Atalante, and The Ships of Air (which came out in hardcover from HarperCollins Eos in 2004) sold to the Polish publisher MAG. They're both fantasy novels. And now, they're both multilingual! Fruma Klass is still riding high from her contest-winning essay. She recently appeared in a "Writers Series" event at her local library to talk about writing essays. Mr. Fruma Klass (you may know him as William Tenn or Philip Klass) appeared a week later for a talk on writing science fiction, so she's definitely in good company! Elspeth Potter has been hard at work recently, with sales to the GLBT Faery anthology So Fey (where she'll be joined by fellow Broads Laurie Marks and Delia Sherman among others). She also sold reprint rights to "Twisted Beauty" to Best of Best Women's Erotica. Theresa Crater has reason to celebrate... a first novel sale. She sold her first novel, Under the Stone Paw, to Hampton Roads for publication in January 2006. Perhaps she'll take a cue from Schelly Steelman regarding publicity. Schelly hosted a book release party to celebrate the release of her novel, The Green Temple, on Monday April 4 at the Blue Plate Restaurant in Washington DC. The Gossip Guru needs to pay more attention to the mailing list as this fun-sounding event took place blocks from home! That glow you saw recently may have been coming from Broad Lyda Morehouse. Lyda received a Special Commendation from the Philip K Dick Award jury. The Philip K Dick Award went to Gwyneth Jones, and a couple of other Broads were also Finalists--Liz Williams and Eileen Gunn. Congrats to all of them! A number of Broads were also Finalists in various categories for the recently announced EPPIE Awards--including Elizabeth K. Burton, Gloria Oliver, Brenna Lyons, Sharon Lee, and Margaret Carter. In fact, the anthology including Margaret's work (Beyond the Mundane: Unravelings) won its category--providing Margaret with some much-coveted Bling (a medallion on a ribbon). Well that rounds out the news for this time. I can't wait for WisCon, where no end of mentionables will occur! Keep me posted (gossip (at) broaduniverse.org) on things happening in YOUR writing career and you may get a mention next time! - Rob |
