Miscellaneous Promotional Ideas
There are probably many more ways to promote Broad Universe and yourself at a convention than we list in these pages. Below are a few you could try. We're always looking for ways to expand this list. If you have any more ideas send them in to: info(at)broaduniverse.org. Meanwhile here's a few to get your juices flowing:
- If you can't get on a panel, offer to hold a workshop on writing, or some other speculative fiction-related activity.
- Most panels have a Q&A session, or will entertain comments/questions from the audience. Attend a panel session that interests you and speak up during the discussion portion.
- Offer to do a reading. Slots are given to the more well-known writers, but if it's a smaller convention, you might have a chance. For a bigger convention, teaming up with one or more other BU authors may be more attractive the the programming committee. You may be able to increase your chances of getting a slot this way.
- Check to see if there are "open mike" nights. Or maybe host an open-mike. This could possibly be a Broad Universe event. Either way, talk up BU at the event.
- Volunteer to be a roving BU reporter. Put together a report for the BU List or BU newsletter after the convention. Or maybe report to the List during the convention if you are able to get Internet access.
- WisCon has a daily newsletter and the editor is usually looking for stories and interviewees. Other conventions may have the same thing. Keep an eye out for newsgatherers and make sure you have something newsworthy to contribute.
